A visit to the northern part of Kakamega Forest

The bus released us right at the KWS gate at the northern edge of Kakamega Forest. From here we decided for the longer walk all the way to Isiukhu Falls as we hoped for a true impression of the forest. The first section let us along the driving route through what is called Mukangu with large trees to either side. We crossed the KWS office area and entered secondary forest. The narrow path took us also across glades.

On one spot Buyangu Hill was visible, but then we dived into forest cover again. The forest got thicker towards the water fall. However, the really large trees were only visible on the other side of Isiukhu River. That day the river carried a lot of water and therefore, impressive pictures could be taken. For the way back we chose to follow the route following exactly the forest edge. This gave us the opportunity to grasp glimpses of Buyangu village with its small thatched-roofed houses. Experiencing drizzling of raindrops throughout, people hurried back in order to avoid to get showered by the common afternoon rain.

But rain is part of a rainforest, isn't it? Therefore, better carry an umbrella or alike if you wish to enjoy a relaxing stroll through the forest.
