BIC as a focal point for stakeholder collaboration facilitates development of the KFE Management Plan, 2012-2022
With Anastasia Mwaura having been part of the technical
team, which supported the Core Planning Team in its endeavour of
coming up with a management plan for the entire Kakamega Forest ecosystem, facilities of the BIC have been
used to support the planning process. Among the many tasks were: the local arrangements for the meetings,
the collating of information to be presented, and the writing-up of draft chapters. A major activity was
the organization of the Stakeholders Workshop. It took place at
Kakamega Guesthouse in Kakamega Town from 22nd to 24th November 2009. In total 58 relevant people of the
area participated and discussed their stakes in a participatory management of Kakamega Forest. Prominent
issues that came up were community livelihoods and the understanding of the KWS/KFS mandates in relation to
the Kakamega Forest Ecosystem. The process ensured their consensus on the final document, the Kakamega
Forest Ecosystem Management Plan, 2012-2022.
