Projects running in the area
benefiting from BIC and vice versa

Two newly funded projects active in Kakamega Forest and its surroundings, both being coordinated by Nature Kenya, made a meeting necessary to thoroughly discuss the role of the BIC as the guardian and disseminator of the BIOTA project outcomes. While BIOTA was research-driven with limited means for implementations on the ground, the new projects are focussing on livelihood engagement and empowerment. Therefore, as the outcome of the meeting on the 27th of February 2012 at BIC it has been mutually agreed that duplication of activities shall be avoided and the BIOTA outputs be made use of wherever of benefit. However, requests for e.g. geodata have to follow the rules practised worldwide. This includes the seeking of permission, the acknowledging of sources and the informing on resulting applications and publications. In return of data provided, any derived data or products should be made available at the BIC, which role is to collate all information on Kakamega Forest for the benefits of the various stakeholders.
