BIC joins in the National Celebrations
of World Habitat Day and wins an award for it!

World Habitat Day is celebrated every first Monday of October in reflection of the state of human settlements and the importance of protecting this habitat for future generations. In Kenya, the national celebrations were held in Kisumu at the Kenyatta Sports Ground from 1st to3rd October 2011. The celebrations were filled with activities such as tree planting, clean up exercises, road shows and sporting activities like football, boat races, etc. Also, several institutions exhibited on their roles in providing a suitable habitat, with participants ranging from human rights groups fighting for the right of shelter for the underprivileged, to organizations in the construction industry, to self-help groups that economically uplifted the poor so that they could provide for themselves the basic necessity of shelter. KWS and BIC exhibited on the their role in conserving the habitat of wildlife, the challenges they face from continuous population growth in cities and towns, effects of climate changes on the biodiversity, and the mitigation measures employed in dealing with the challenges. The main day was graced by the Minister and Assistant Minister of Housing and other dignitaries whose main message was on protection of habitats for all living beings. A moment of silence was observed in remembrance of the role of Prof. Wangari Maathai in conservation of the Kenyan forests and their biodiversity.

The KWS/BIC stand won a trophy for being the best exhibitor at the event as the message conveyed from our display was in line with the theme of 'Cities and Climate Change'.
