The Biota East Africa Atlas distributed to the local stakeholder groups to help in conservation of Kakamega Forest

On 17th February 2011, BIC held the 'BIOTA EA Atlas Distribution and Awareness Workshop' where the atlases were handed out to the local stakeholder community groups and an awareness programme was conducted on the interpretation of the images, maps, diagrams and charts illustrating Kakamega Forest Ecosystem.

This was the first time that most of the community representatives were visiting BIC and so they also got a brief tour of the centre. They were encouraged to visit the centre as often they could, and make use of its facilities as they are meant for their use. During the workshop, the participants were persuaded to act as ambassadors of conservation and to use the atlases during village barazas and any other information-sharing avenues so that the greater community could understand how various factors brought about loss of forest cover and which measures they could take in enhancing conservation of the forest. The different community groups that participated also got an opportunity to share the progress that their groups had made in their efforts to conserve the forest and in marketing it as an ideal tourist attraction.
