Kick-off Workshop at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences

in the Black ForestThe workshop finally made UnivGisKoop participants of all three partner institutions involved to meet for the first time and, therefore, these activities facilitated the getting to known of each other. But surely, most of the time was dedicated to real work. Over the past months the project partners of MMUST and MAK had put efforts in collating information necessary to streamline and harmonise GIS teaching in existing curricula at their university and to develop first ideas on enhanced courses including content. At the workshop, HsKA as the project lead now steered lively discussions by presenting from own experiences in other capacity building projects or from the teaching at HsKA as well as by asking the East African partners to solve tasks based on maps and to explore geodata and applications from areas located map excerciseclose to the universities. Finally, together with the three representatives each of MMUST and MAK a plan for three courses (geodata use, GIS 1, GIS 2) has been developed considering the study programmes of relevance as well as the contents (theory and exercises). It has been agreed on to set-up the required documents for curricula integration next and then first to start elaborating teaching material of GIS 1 at the introductory level. This has to be achieved until August next year when the 2nd UnivGisKoop workshop will take place. The German and Ugandan partners are already looking forward to then travel to MMUST in western Kenya.
