Prep. visit to MMUST

The preparatory visit of Prof. Dr. Gertrud Schaab from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HsKA, Germany) to Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST, Kenya) marked the 24th of February 2012 as the day when the cooperation contract between the three universities collaborating within the DAAD-funded UnivGisKoop received the third and last signature of the three universities involved.preparatory visit to MMUST
The visit was also used to recap the aims of the newly started project on streamlining GIS teaching within and across the Eastern African Universities while emphasizing a regional focus. Here, Prof. Dr. Gertrud Schaab communicated what she had learned during her recent visit to the third university involved, Makerere (MAK, Uganda). It became obvious that MAK as the much larger and older university is ahead of MMUST regarding GIS labs and geomatics-focused study courses. Nevertheless, both universities will similarly benefit from a well-structured and up-to-date GIS teaching, with MMUST being very ambitious and enthusiastic about the chances of enhancing their curricula. It is now the task of Dr. Edward Neyole to motivate his team comprising members of many departments (Disaster Management, Biology, Geography, Civil Engineering) at MMUST to come up with ideas how to harmonize the GIS teaching across the university and to progress the setting-up of a jointly-used GIS lab. The project is receiving full support regarding its ambitious targets by the DVC for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Asenath Sigot and the Director for International Academic Linkages Dr. Elisabeth Abenga.
