Prep. visit to MAK

With the DAAD’s decision to support the UnivGisKoop project, preparatory visits marked the beginning of a four-year cooperation between Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HsKA, Germany), Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST, Kenya) and Makere University (MAK, Uganda). The aim is to streamline GIS teaching within and across the Eastern African universities while emphasizing a regional focus.preparatiory visit to MAK
The visit by Prof. Dr. Gertrud Schaab to Makerere University on 21st and 22nd of February 2012 served the purpose to meet with the Makerere project team for discussing the project’s objectives, to get to known the teaching situation on the ground, and to seek for institutional support within the university management. In a joint discussion it became clear that the first important activity is to collate information on the many GIS courses across various departments (Geomatics, Environment, Geography, Forestry) in order to design the structure of three modules on geodata use and GIS which will harmonize the teaching of GIS at MMUST and MAK within the different study courses to varying extents. Only then the actual working on teaching material (including theory and exercises) can begin. The team led by Assoc. Prof. Gerald Eilu and the project head Prof. Dr. Gertrud Schaab agreed that the planning phase should be completed by the time representatives of all three universities will meet in Germany in September.
